With a maximum concert capacity of 14,800 - since reduced to 14,000 - the Sports Arena was not as large as the 18,000-seat Forum in Los Angeles. Performances by Cream, Diana Ross & The Supremes, the Rolling Stones, Santana and the San Diego-bred Iron Butterfly followed. The first concert at the Sports Arena was by James Brown on Feb. 17 of that year, was a match between the San Diego Gulls and the Seattle Totems of the Western Hockey League.
